With their tuxes already rented and their champagne already on ice, power thirsty Democrats and Blacks are preparing for the likelihood of getting their ultimate pick for president with Barack Obama.
As my curiosities forever take me in the direction of what will be the next logical and then illogical direction, balance the two and drum out a conclusion, I asked the following questions to ordinary voters, specifically black voters:
Can Barack Obama deliver on his promises? Can he fulfill their private expectations? How long will they be able to blame George W. Bush if Obama can not deliver anything?
My thoughts turn toward the future and what Americans can expect from an Obama administration. Of course we will hear about the first, whatever sounds catchy and seems popular number of projected days of getting the Obama initiatives activated.
Then we will be amazed by the poetic stance and verse of the new standard for terming the vision, such as with Bush 41 and his “Thousand Points of Light”. We can also expect that Bush will be the main focus of blame for any problems in moving Obama’s agenda forward, with the obligatory reasons: “We didn’t know that it was this bad!” or “We found many hidden problems….”, yada, yada, yada…
Over the last few days while asking the questions, I have experienced quite an odyssey of half-baked emotions rolled up into a real sense of political ego saturated with racially motivated confidence. Whereas Barack Obama will fulfill the dreams of many, to others he becomes a liability and a possible precursor to a nightmare.
Now, this is not scientific but to get my research done, I sat at a couple of the many local coffee shops. I would listen intently, waiting for an opening to interject the questions. Many looked at me with disbelief that I would be already asking about the future when the guy has not even sat in the Oval office.
But answer they did and their answers made me come to the realization that this presidency holds the possibility of greatness and those that believe in it the most hold it with the knowledge that it could be like sand slipping through their fingers.
As much as it is jubilation there is a quite desperation brought on by our discussion.
This desperation can be found in the realization that it could be reversely just as devastating for Democrats and especially Blacks if Obama becomes just more of the same kind of business as usual for inside the beltway.
Blacks may ultimately realize that the promises of the Democratic Party are no more reliable than a used prophylactic and finally discard their false promises for a new vision and purpose.
This entire presidential political process has taken the wind from most questions, and with the finish line in sight most are willing to admit that at this point Obama could be found with a nuke in his home addressed to “Osama for Jihad purposes” and they would believe it was a Republican setup.
It is the kind of blind faith that T.V. religious pop stars enjoy all the while being caught engaging in questionably moral behavior. The donations pile in while begging for forgiveness from the pulpit.
What is even more curious is that most blacks believe that if Obama does not deliver on any of what I like to call their private political needs; violence in the black community, wages and the number of black incarcerated within the U.S. penal system, and then they will believe that Obama has been bought off.
If you don’t know this I will tell you, blacks see the Republican Party as the party of oppression, it is the party of “whitey” and any blacks that gain a seat of power within the party is no more than an Uncle Tom.
Which lead me to ask “will he (Obama) not be bought off by the same party –Democratic- that has made all the promises over the years, and spoon fed you little by little to keep you dependent upon them?” It took a few moments for that one to sink in, but after a bit of banter back in forth the idea was put forth that at least “we got a spoonful, rather then a shovel of dirt thrown on us.”
It was further asserted that the independent movement has grown throughout the nation, and that may be a path that blacks may consider. At that point I have to remind them that the black population as a whole has voted upwards of 98% democratic in the last 2 presidential elections and in fact 9 million new voters have been signed up over the past week and a reported 98% were Democratic Party affiliation.
With that the tone changed and I could tell that I was about to be asked if I was racist. I then broke the silence with this… We all can say that whites questioning Obama qualifications does cause blacks to think that there may be a racial component involved, but what after the election. I further added that Obama will enjoy a total unified Congress with the House and Senate holding Democratic Majorities. I asked “how can a racial component be asserted when questioning Obamas job performance?”
Amazingly it was agreed that it can not. Once Obama becomes president, blacks feel that he has a real choice to make policy, and decisions that he endorses and that the black those concerns that the community holds as their own. I then asked about their prior statements of “Obama being bought off… you want it both ways, how will this be determined”. A case by case basis was the answer.
I then asked the final question. How long will Bush be blamed before that will not work? Everyone agreed that Obama will have a full plate and that clearing that plate will cause the plate to fill even higher before even a small piece of the bottom is seen. All wanted to reserve judgment on this question, as they put it “we only see the peas and carrots, a bit of the mashed potatoes… none of the meat”
It was then put forth that it will not matter on Election Day… “cause when we –whites- in that booth, we will only see white for McCain and black for Obama, and in that most private of all moments, the moments we spend as a citizen in there, our fears, and not our guilt will take over and McCain will be elected.”
I replied… I’m not so sure about that, but your entitled to your opinion.
